SEED VAULT – work in progress

Feature length screenplay

"God (Nature, in my view) makes all things good; man meddles with them and they become evil. He forces one soil to yield the products of another, one tree to bear another's fruit. He confuses and confounds time, place, and natural conditions. He mutilates his dog, his horse, and his slave. He destroys and defaces all things; he loves all that is deformed and monstrous; he will have nothing as nature made it, not even himself, who must learn his paces like a saddle-horse, and be shaped to his master's taste like the trees in his garden.

Script excerpt

In South Africa today, scientists are reporting the demise of the soy bean 257S crop that has been widely planted throughout the nation. The hugely successful crop, expected to be harvested next month has suddenly developed an unknown strain of mould that appears to be devouring the fruit and ultimately killing the plants.

CUT TO: SCIENTIST These crops are bred to be disease resistant. But this is a disease we’ve never seen before. That’s not something you can plan for. We’ve never seen anything like it.

CUT TO: A reporter Anisha Blake is at the scene of one of the failing crop plantations. She is surrounded by African children scantily clad, looking hungry and African women who work the fields

ANISHA BLAKE, REPORTER For this community it is devastating … not only do they rely on these beans for their protein but its also their employment and provides much needed income. If they can’t harvest them, there’ll be no money on the table for other things like medicine and education. RICHARD Jesus Christ

AL I told you it would come to this.

RICHARD Don’t start.

AL If you’re okay with altering baby formula with out human trials that’s your business

RICHARD That was in the 1980’s.

AL Or ingesting pesticide resistant corn.

RICHARD Also a 1980’s argument. Maybe 1990’s.

AL The argument may have evolved but human beings are the same.

Richard mouthes the following words as Al says them. He’s heard this a million times before.

They’re still driven by greed and hubris.

RICHARD Do you have any idea what this is?

AL If I had my guess …

Richard’s phone rings

STUART BRADSHAW Have you seen the news?

RICHARD It looks like the same stuff I saw this afternoon on the corn. And I think it’s what’s thrown the yields out in my report. (to his father Al) Dad, I have to go. I’ll call you later.

AL … but what would I know

STUART BRADSHAW What the hell is it?

RICHARD Give me an hour. I’m in the lab now.

STUART BRADSHAW I’m sending the team in as well. Don’t talk to anyone.
