EXIT – a play about modern slavery in Australia

What is the cost of silence?

"These men arrived, all of them armed with guns, knives hanging by their waists. There was a young girl in the field - maybe eight years old. They shouted at her and she ran in the opposite direction. I don’t know what would have made her think she was in danger at such a young age but they ran after her. I knew that there would be trouble, that they had bad things in mind to do to her and I followed."

Currently in development EXIT is a play that traces the journey of Ram, a young man from rural India whose silence during an act of violence sets him on a path of exile, exploitation, and impossible choices.

Torn from his family and sent abroad under the promise of work, Ram finds himself trapped in an Australian restaurant kitchen, working endless hours without pay, his passport withheld, his dignity stripped away.

As the pressures mount, his past haunts him: the memory of the girl he failed to save, the father who called him a coward, and the family he left behind.

Examining the line between witness and bystander, victim and survivor, Exit asks what it takes to act when silence becomes complicity.

I hope to invite audiences to wrestle with urgent questions of justice, human trafficking, and the fragile threads of moral courage.
