Cow Awkward

A children's picture book looking for a publisher

"... every moo here knows she’s no proper cow"

Cow Awkward (working title) is an 850-word rhyming picture book for readers aged 4–10 about a clumsy, curious cow who saves her herd by being exactly what they’ve always mocked her for being — different.

While the herd grazes politely and keeps their hooves clean, Mina climbs fences, splashes in wells, and wobbles across barrels. Her curiosity and chaos make her the herd’s favourite complaint.

She’s clumsy and silly, a trouble somehow—
And every moo here knows she’s no proper cow

When a storm floods the paddock, the docile herd panics. Fences float away, troughs overturn, and the cows slide helplessly through the rising water.

The paddock was churning with muddle and muck,
The hay bales went bobbing, the troughs came unstuck.
The chicken coop drifted, the rabbit run too,
A little dog’s kennel went sailing askew

Only Mina, used to clambering, balancing, and muddling through, knows what to do. She climbs the same ladders and barrels she was scolded for

She scrambled on hay bales half-sunk in the flood,
She skidded on planks that were slicked up with mud.

Eventually forcing open the gate she leads the herd to safety on higher ground. Exhausted and muddy, Mina lies still as the others realise what she’s done. The cow they called foolish has saved them all. From that day on, they see their world — and Mina — a little differently.

Soon the whole herd is trying Mina’s silly tricks: blowing dandelion fluff, splashing in puddles, and tumbling about in laughter. Mina’s oddness becomes their joy.

And though every cow still found her absurd,
They cheered her, they loved her, she was one of their herd.

Cow Awkward celebrates individuality, resilience, and the courage to turn what makes you different into a gift for others. Both comic and heartfelt, the story delivers an exciting read-aloud experience about belonging and self-acceptance — reminding readers that sometimes the silliest cow in the paddock is also the bravest.
